How to use it properly
Applying a patch takes fifteen seconds. Applying one so it's still there twelve hours later takes about thirty.
Before you open the packet
Almost every patch failure traces back to the skin, not the adhesive. Two minutes of preparation solves it.
- Clean and completely dry. Wash the area with plain soap and dry it thoroughly. Adhesive and damp skin do not get along.
- No moisturiser, oil or sunscreen. Body lotion is the single most common reason a patch slides off within the hour.
- Very hairy areas need trimming, not shaving. Trimming improves contact; a fresh shave leaves micro-abrasions that warming botanicals will find.
- Not straight out of a hot shower. Give the skin ten minutes to cool and stop perspiring first.
Applying it
- Peel the protective film off the adhesive side.
- Position the patch centred over the spot you'd point to if someone asked where it aches.
- Press down from the centre outwards, smoothing as you go so no air pockets are trapped under the edges.
- Hold your palm over it for five to ten seconds. Body heat helps the adhesive bond.
- Wash your hands.
Placement by area
| Area | Where exactly | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Knee | Over or just below the kneecap, on the side that bothers you | Apply with the knee slightly bent so the patch isn't stretched taut when you walk |
| Lower back | Either side of the spine, over the muscle | Not directly on the spine itself |
| Shoulder | Over the top of the shoulder or the upper trapezius | Watch for a shirt collar rubbing an edge loose |
| Neck | Base of the neck, to one side | Aromatic ingredients are strongest here — you'll smell it all day |
| Elbow / wrist | Over the joint, applied with a slight bend | High-movement areas; smooth the edges down firmly |
| Calf / ankle / foot | Over the muscle belly or the joint | Socks and shoes help hold the edges down |
Wear time and removal
The manufacturer states 8 to 12 hours. There's no benefit in pushing past that — the active layer is spent, and leaving adhesive on skin longer than needed only increases the chance of irritation.
To remove: peel back slowly at a shallow angle, in the direction the hair grows, supporting the skin with your other hand. Ripping it off quickly is how you turn a comfortable experience into a memorable one. If it's stubborn, a little oil around the edges loosens the adhesive.
Afterwards the skin under the patch may look pink. That's normal with warming botanicals and usually settles within the hour. Give the area a break before applying another patch to the same spot.
Building it into a day
Two patterns cover most people. Morning application — put one on before breakfast and it carries you through the working day, which suits anyone on their feet. Evening application — put one on after dinner and wear it overnight, which suits people whose knees complain most when they finally stop moving.
Pick one and stay with it for a week rather than alternating. You'll learn far more about whether the format suits you from seven consistent days than from seven scattered ones.
Mistakes worth avoiding: applying over moisturiser; putting a heat pad or hot water bottle on top of a patch; using one on broken or irritated skin; touching your eyes before washing your hands; and moving a half-used patch from one spot to another — once the adhesive has lifted, it won't seat properly again.
